THE MANSION

ARHONTIKO is 4-star traditional apartment building. It is situated in the centre of Arhanes, a traditional town built at the foot of the sacred mount Jiouktas.

Built in 1893, it is a fine example of 19th century inland Cretan architecture. It played an important role throughout the recent history of Arhanes. During the Cretan revolt against the Turkish rule, in 1897, it was used as barracks and headquarters of the Regiment of Select Cretans under the command of Ioannis Dafotis. In early 20th century it accommodated the needs of the community of Arhanes for an elementary school for several years.

Arhontiko has been restored with care and respect to its original architectural elements, thus giving a new meaning to ‘traditional’. The CACG [Central Archaeological Council Of Greece has characterized ‘Arhontiko’ as a Protected Traditional Building.

All of ‘Arhontiko’ interiors are fitted with antiques, old embroideries and handmade furniture. The beautiful enclosed yard is decorated with stones that are hand-carved by the very stone-builders that raised the house. Amidst an abundance of flowers and a multitude of colors and scents, the visitors can enjoy their coffee, tsikoudia and many more beverages made from the unique wild herbs gathered from the sacred mountain of Jiouktas or taste a thousand …and one treats prepared with care by the house owners.

STAYING AT 'ARHONTIKO'

ARHONTIKO has 4 independent, fully equipped apartments that can accommodate from 2 up to 4 persons and operates throughout the year. Each apartment features a spacious day-room and fireplace and bedroom with old style steel beds.

Each apartment has:
WC/Bath tub

THE GREATER AREA OF ARHANES

Arhanes is a picturesque small town, built at an altitude of 380 meters [1280 ft] in the middle of a basin. It is run through by Kaeratos stream, dividing into two parts. Arhanes is 14 kilometers away from the city of Heraklion and only 7 kilometers from the Palace of Knossos. The greater area of Arhanes is most significant for its numerous archaeological sites.

During your stay at ARHONTIKO you will keep your days full of activities. Strolls through the narrow streets of the old town, visits at the Minoan, Byzantine and Folklore museums to discover the local history. The multitude of traditional and historic buildings, scattered across the town will simply enchant you!

Visit the various restaurants and taverns at the central square to discover the world famous Cretan cuisine or the exquisite Arhanes wines. Discover the methods the people of yester Crete used to produce their precious products, wine and olive oil, by visiting the traditional olive and wine presses. Why not participate in the summer harvesting of grapes during the celebration of the Arhanes Farmer Festival and many more cultural activities.

For those of you that prefer trekking and walks in the nature, there’s a lot to choose from: walk up to the sacred mountain, Jioukta, where according to ancient mythology, Zeus, the father of Gods and Humans has been buried. Walk along E4, the European trail to the Silamiano gorge under the thick shade of oaks and sycamores.
