We visit Elounda a few times a year if we can. May and October with a June mini-visit. We went in January 05 and had a great time, the weather was similar to a British summer. The village was quiet compared to summer but enough places open to go for a meal;its not purely for tourists, it's a working fishing village. We go under our own steam, sometimes cheaper sometimes not. We stay at the same place as the view and proximity to the village ARE ideal. On Sunday morning the sound from curch service 'floats' up as we sit out on the balcony, it's so uplifting.. There are many decent places to eat and drink. Traditonal and modern. All tastes are catered for. We're not beach folk but there is a lovely municipal beach and smaller beaches either side.about half a mile in each direction. There are trips over to Spinaloga, originally a fortress sometimes called 'the island of tears' as it was a leper colony until the mid 50's, it's well worth a visit. The bay is beautiful and the boat trip alone is worth it.

There is the sunken city but you need to snorkel to see it. not for me. Above Elounda is Mavrakiano, with a bar owned by Michalis the oldest man in the district. Locals love it up there. The sunsets are spectacular from up there. It's difficult to get to if you have mobility problems though. There are music bars and karioke if you want it, Greek nights, etc. but they don't dominate. A truly relaxing place, and you can stop out 'til dawn if you want to, which we quite often do as the time just flies by as we're having such a good time.

Other times we just flop, looking out on the bay until the light goes. and then unlike here , if we feel like nipping to the village at midnight we can, hence the coming back at dawn when we nip down for 'just the one'

We're Saga Louts, at 55 and 59 we come back home feeling 20 years younger. Theres no Whacky Warehouse MC D's or water parks in the local area but you can find Mc.Ds and waterparks in Hersonisis. I hope Elounda stays that way.Elounda is a good base for trips further afield as you feel you are going home at the end of the day. Public transport is good, regular. Taxis go on 'til about 2am, possibly later, there are walks to take around and out of the village area if you are up to it.

All in all I doubt I will ever find a place that makes me feel as at peace as I do when I'm there and then within minutes I'm in FRienDS my 'local' laughing until my ribs ache. It suits all my moods.

We did a trip in June for four days on late flight £97.50/ap.60 euros each, a the beauty of going under your own steam. You can pay a fortune to stay at plush places and they are some of the best in Europe, but I just don't see the point. I much prefer to 'go Greek' in the village, you could be anywhere in the 'posh. end. They do all get stunning views though, but so do we, and at a price per night they pay for two Greek salads. I am counting the days until I go back in October these grey days are getting me down.
