the first time I went to Agia galini was 30 years ago, when it was a fishing village. I went back 3 years ago, and now the village was made for tourists, but still nice

I fist discovered Galini in the mid-'80s when driving around Crete with a friend following our noses. It was love at first sight and alyhough we only stayed for the day I vowed to return. I have done about 20 times for varying lengths of stay, the longest being 6 weeks. I had a gap of about 10 years when I was travelling the world and doing other things and only returned by chance when I was offered a cheap last minute package. I expected it to be ruined by over development but was pleasantly surprised. This renewed the love affair. Most of the guide books say ( and always have said!) that Galini was a lovely fishing village but got ruined by too many tourists. Rubbish. There are fewer tourists now than there were in its hippy heyday of the late 60's and early 70's. It has retained its very laid back feel, is still much cheaper than anywhere on the dreaded north coast and if you want to crash in one place for a week or two you have no need to leave. Everything you could wish for is there. Excellent eating (try Onars roof top restraunt), a good beach 10 mins walk to the left, boat trips to more secluded beaches and plenty of places to wet your whistle. South coast sunsets, late night music and drinking at Blue Bar with Heinze and his beautiful Greek wife etc.etc.etc. I will be back in a weeks time so why not find out for yourself. I don't think there are many U.K. packages but get a flight, hire a car at the airport or even catch the bus and find a room when you arrive. I guarantee you will find one. Just ask around. Enjoy.

we have been going to galini now for 18years, we have traveled around crete and found that this is the best of the places on the south coast. everyone is friendly and helpful all the tavernas speak english so they will explain to you anything you don't understand. the beach is not for to walk from the harbour, with plenty of tavernas to choose from to eat or a drink, it is well sited for you to do trips to all of the main sights, we would recommend this to people who like to relax but might want a bit of night life too. not with discos but nice bars to have that late chill-out drink.we are returning again this year [06] hope to see some of you ther.

we visited agia galini in may 1999 where we got married. the village was lovely, people was very friendly and the nightlife relaxed. a couple of disco's if you wanted to club the night away or plenty of tavernas for a more relaxed feeling. ampull of fresh fish for seafood lovers and plenty of meat on the grills plus local foods.i would recommend the local beer mythos cheap and gorgeous. sadly the tour operator pulled out of the village so we couldn't find it anywhere to get back to the resort, but now we have found it with kosmar and are flying out at the end of june, can't wait from a pair of galini lovers simon and becky xxxx

we were sent here on a package holiday with thomas cook travel. as a last minute deal we felt as if we had struck gold. most people were sent to concrete complexes on the north of the island. to find ourselves in such a laid back, peaceful village, with friendly locals an idyllic scenery was very fortunate. its somewhere i would like to see again. sadly its said that a lot more construction is on the way, as it's becoming more popular. i hope it doesnt turn into another concrete mess, places like this are becoming quite rare.
