Yeah, Kalathas beach lies a short distance outside of Chania, close to Chania airport, but is really worth a visit. Lots of beach, with many guests. The locals from Chania blends beautifully with the tourists.

Kalathas is an excellent home-base for visiting West Crete. Geogio's Blue Apartments are where my wife and I always stay. There is one quite nice restaurant just up the road from the beach back toward the village. The beach at Kalathas is nice, but you can go down the road a few kilometers to Stravos beach which is wonderful. Just across from Stavros beach is Christina's Taverna which has really good authentic food and a menu that varies daily. If you don't know tthe names of the dishes, all you have to do is go back to the kitchen and point! While there is no good grocery store in Kalathas, it is a fairly short trip to Chania or in the other direction to a nice grocery in Souda. You can get to Kalathas by overnight ferry from Athens or by air to the Chania airport which is only a few kilometers away. I hope you go and have fun. My wife and I will spend this next June there.(our fourth visit)
