If you're bored with chocolate bunnies and Easter egg hunts, the Easter celebrations at the Greek town of Agios Nikolaos might be the answer. Situated on the island of Crete, Agios Nikolaos plays host to the Anastassi Easter festival, which culminates in the burning of a Judas effigy, attended by thousands of local people. On Easter Sunday, people gather at the nearby lake and bear candles to mark the occasion. Then the Judas figure is burned and a dramatic firework display follows. The town also offers tourists a great deal of history. It is built on the ancient city of Latos Pros Kamara, which used to be a significant trade centre. Two islands stand at the entrance of the port, one of which plays host to the Agion Panton chapels. According to legend, the goddess Athena washed her hair in the lake, which is connected to the sea and is surrounded by red rocks and conifers. The area is also well-known for its clean beaches and a wide range of water sports that are available. A ferry runs from Piraeus to Agios Nikolaos six times a week. © Adfero Ltd http://www.gotravelinsurance.co.uk/public/news.asp?id=17079710
