RETHYMNON PREFECTURE
Rethymno is surrounded by mountains. East of the prefecture is mountain Psiloritis (2456m), the highest and most famous of Crete. Southwest of Psiloritis is the mountain chain of Kerdos (1777m). At the northeast end of Rethymno is situated mountain Kouloukounas or Talea Mountains, while southwest of the prefecture is mountain Kryoneritis (1312).

Rethymno is mostly mountainous with relatively little alterations of morphology. The lowlands are located in the north shores of Rethymno. From the endless vineyards is produced the fine cretan olive oil. During your tour around the prefecture you will see the olive groves, where the famous wine and tsikoudia (cretan grape spirit) are produced.

As you explore Rethymno you will meet the historic town of Rethymno, Spyli, Lake Preveli, Anogia, Plakia, Episkopi, Agia Galini and you will be impressed by the majesty of nature which, along with human will create beautiful villages with structures of unique style. You will find historic monuments all around Rethymno. Worth visiting are the historic monasteries of Arkadion (or Arkadi) and Preveli.

Here you can visit :

RETHYMNON PREFECTURE PHOTOS

MONASTIRAKI - Monastiraki lies in the valley of Amari, on the natural route leading from northern Crete to the Messara plain. Excavations have brought to light a centre of the Old Palace period (1950-1700 B.C.). which was destroyed by fire following an earthquake. The Fountain - This is an unusual fountain with 19 lion heads in a row spitting out water in Rethymno Spili. It seemed to be fed by a stream but I wan't able to tell for sure. Sea and Wall - A view of the sea from the Venetian fortress.
